The Big Art Road Trip
April is the month of birdsong in Maine. I live for these mornings and the cacophony that celebrates springtime.
“The seeker embarks on a journey to find what he wants and discovers, along the way, what he needs.” ― Wally Lamb, The Hour I First Believed
April is also the month that The Big Art Road Trip project was hatched.
I released 7 large-scale paintings into the world, big abstract expressionist paintings I have been working on for over a year. Contemporary and full of energy, these abstract paintings are my best (and favorite) work. I love the physicality of working on a big canvas. It feels expansive and full of possibilities. In making them, I feel free; able to take these paintings where they want to go, or rather it’s the paintings that take me where they want to go. Yes, that feels more accurate. I’m transformed in making them, and they truly transform the space they occupy.

Large-Scale art requires a crate making it somewhat expensive to ship, and since we had two heading to the Carolinas, we decided to make a road trip out of it. Any of these paintings can be delivered and installed at no additional cost. (East of the Mississippi.) You can see them all and inquire about them in the virtual room here.
Learning Always:
Twyla Tharp has a new documentary inspiring me to read her book Keep it Moving Her process is so simply and beautifully described. ‘The dance comes from dancing’. I would add that the art comes from the ARTing, it takes time dedication to create and mature your artistic expression. . As Tharp says in the film: “Dancers have to work every day. I have to work every day.”
Exhibition News:
This painting ‘Rewilding’ was juried into the ‘Wild Things’ show at River Arts in Damariscotta, Maine. Juror Jorge Arango selected this show of 78 artists. The show runs from April 21 to May 22, 2021.
I’m in a new gallery this year in the lovely little town of Belfast, Maine. New works will be shown monthly at Local Color Gallery. This town has good art, good coffee and little shops making it a wonderful place to roam. It has a walking trail along the water, and festivals scheduled this summer. A quintessential Maine town.
Color: A big topic, in bite-sized morsels.
Color of the Month : Carnelian A Vintage Modern Hue. I love the way this color is soaked in richness and depth. I’m tempted to use it in a painting..
Art Feast:
Erika Stearly is an artist crush of mine. I just want to live in every one of her rooms. I ordered a collection of her postcards and they are dreamy good! Check out her great feed on Instagram too.
Good Art People: Where I find Artists doing good
ArtVan Founded by my good friend Jamie Silvestri 16 years ago, this therapeutic mobile arts program brings art (yes! in a van!) to underserved neighborhoods here in Maine. I love Jamie’s generous spirit and the energy and encouragement she brings to the world. ArtVan is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. You can support ArtVan here and here
